Modems

This Control Panel remains the same as under Windows 95 - one of the few not to have changed at all. If you have no modem installed then the first time you open this Control Panel you will go directly to the Add New Hardware wizard to add a new modem either automatically or manually.

If you have got one or more modems installed then you have access to them here as they appear in the list. You can change the properties for any modem by selecting it and choosing the Properties button. In there you can change the transfer speed and the types of control used to access external systems. If you want to add another modem, the Add button will again take you to the Add New Hardware modem.

Incidentally the Add New Modem part of the Add New Hardware wizard has been updated with new graphics, but the same functionality.

There is a Dialing Properties button that take you to the Properties that you set up the first time you installed a modem, such as what area code you are in, country and whether a prefix number is required to reach an outside line. See also Telephony

The Diagnostics tab simply lists the modems and gives you access to the Drivers used for that modem. It also has a More Information button that will query the modem to get details that it may store about its usage.
